Escape Goat Review

Escape Goat has been a surprisingly interesting addition to the June Bug Bundle. So we decided to do a review of it for you.

Escape Goat is from the Old School

It uses a style you might expect from games made by Magical Time Bean. It also plays like an old platform game. It has deceptively simple controls that you use in some very nice environments. The story is not exactly breathtaking, but it doesn’t need to be great when the gameplay is really good.

Escape Goat Levels

The Levels Make the Game

Despite adhering to a rather basic formula, the level design is really excellent. The pieces of each level interact with each other in very interesting ways. Each one is a unique challenge, and each part of the level can have an impact on other part. Overall these are some of the most enjoyable platforming maps we have played.

Escape Goat Editor

The Level Editor

It also has a very simple and useful level editor. You can create some truly impressive maps with this. In fact you can rig explosives, have switchers, and much more. This lends the game a bit of an “Incredible Machine” feel. You can truly make something on part with that game.

No Bonus Points for Being Indie

We love indie games, but in our book you don’t get bonus points for being indie. We must mention that it does not exactly do anything new. Everything here is something another platformer has done. It also has very little in the way of story. Basically you are a goat imprisoned for witchcraft. You must escape and learn the secret of the prison. That being said, the gameplay is so good that it is in fact quite a feat.

The Final Verdict on Escape Goat

4/5 Great

Escape Goat combines some absolutely excellent gameplay with a good level editor. The visuals, while simple, are crisp and look quite nice. The only things that keep it from perfection are the short play time, lack of innovation and lack of story.
