When you win Best in Play 2014 at the GDC it can garner some attention. So today we are going to put a spotlight on the winner and recent Steam addition Enemy Mind. It features a very innovative concept that has garnered it industry attention.
The Enemy Mind Gimmick
The game starts off as a normal shooter with one ship. However you quickly find out that this one handles power-ups in a much different way than you are used to. In Enemy Mind when you eliminate an opposing ship you can transfer your consciousness to it.
In this way each enemy you can transfer to acts as another body for you and there are 20+ of them. Each one has a specific type of shot including ones you would expect like scatter and homing.
An Adaptive Story System
Enemy Mind also boasts what they call an “adapative story system” which changes the overall story as you play. Depending on your performance key events will be different. It likely has something to do with the fact that a force is watching your moves as you mow down wave after wave of enemies and switch from ship to ship. Will this be an amazing part of gameplay or another let down like the games that have made this claim before?
The Art and Music of Enemy Mind
The game has a retro soundtrack with some retro graphics as well. It all also has a techno vibe to it from the sound to art. Ships and areas of space look distinctly cybernetic. If you want to listen for yourself they have the soundtrack up on Bandcamp.
Additional Features of Enemy Mind
The game itself is on Steam sale for $7.99 USD. Additional features include:
- Multiplayer for four people
- A soundtrack by Rainbow Kitten
So it seems like a fairly good value at the price so take a look.
