Double Fine has their own Humble Bundle now. We will be going over how it is run and asking an important question.
The Double Fine Amnesia Fortnight Bundle
In this bundle you will be voting for 4 prototypes. Those who donate will get these 4 prototype games, the Happy Song prototype and the Costume Quest prototype. This bundle is noteworthy for not having any full commercial games. However the prototypes do look quite interesting. The creation of the prototypes will be streamed and contributors will get downloads and Steam keys. It does seem like an overall good deal.
Why does Double Fine need this bundle at all?
Double Fine got a huge amount of funding from their Kickstarter. We are just absolutely confused by why they need the funding here. While this is certainly not the first time that a developer has gotten some money from a charity event, it is very odd this time. We have heard very little about where all the money from their Kickstarter went. To put it simply, we seem to be paying for indie games 2-3 times before they even become real.
Double Fine, a ravenous hunger for funding and Psychonauts
We will of course probably get some people saying it goes to the prototype creators. This is true in only the most roundabout fashion. While it is undeniable that Psychonauts was great, they didn’t need to do all this to make it.This is perhaps a sign of how things have changed for mid-size companies and small. Is this better or worse than the old days? You should decide.
Our beef with the Double Fine Bundle
It does make good business sense to get all the funding you can. But as a consumer you should step back and see the whole picture. Many of you, we are sure, will be fine with giving Double Fine all the funding they want. And that’s fine. That’s Double Fine. It’s just that in their shoes we would donate all the funds to charity. A few others in the field do as well.
