The very famous and now quite old series Disgaea is getting its latest update with Disgaea 4: a promise unforgotten.
In Disgaea 4, as you might expect, the same formula applies as previous games. Create exciting character and customize fun abilities. Then GRIND FOREVER UNTIL YOU JUST WANT TO BREAK THE GAME. If this is your cup of tea, it is mine for reasons I don’t understand, then this game has more of it than ever.
As far as the original gameplay, you have more levels, attacks and options with stacking than ever before. You can even use your party as a sort of claw machine to grab chests. Same basic leveling system and battles as other games. And of course Laharl will be returning, because we can’t do a game without him. Axel will also be returning as a main character.
So what is actually new about Disgaea 4? Quite a bit actually, most notably a multiplayer mode. You can design your own pirate shit and attack other players much like in Demon’s Souls. Not only that but you can finally make your own maps, which could ease the terrible grind quite a bit. This is something that needed to be around for ages but just simply wasn’t.
There is also a new transforming system based on older Nippon Ichi titles, which allow you to combine monsters in new ways then make them into weapons. The final noteworthy addition is the fact that there will be an overworld map. Whether this will be a useful addition or just another grind, we aren’t sure yet.
You can check out the trailer here. Overall it looks like a good addition for fans of the series. New players? Well we will just have to see whether the tutorial gets them interested in the game. You can pick it up now at most retailers, although some may have ordered limited copies in North America.
