Crowdsourcing Trends in Gaming #1 - The Promoter - Nerd Age
23
In this series, we are going to be going over crowdsourcing trends. If you are a game developer, you have likely heard of such things. However there are many ways to do it, and our series will explore how you can use crowdsourcing for your own game.
What is Crowdsourcing?
Crowdsourcing is a simple term for allowing fans to decide on aspects of your project. It is also used for building and website projects. You allow fans to have their name on part of it or get a special bonus. In return, they give you a massive amount of funding for your game.
The Promoter
There are many ways to go about this, but one of the most popular ones is having a promoter. Perhaps the most famous indie game promoter for crowdsourcing is Notch. He has brought a great many games to success through his fanbase. These include Octodad 2 and others.
Electronic Arts and Crowdsourcing
At the same time, EA is offering up free tickets to people. They are offering distribution on Origins to people. While certainly it is a quick path to success, it also hurts your image in the indie community by doing this. They are also trying to repair their injured image with this and things such as the EA Indie Bundle.
Finding your Promoter
Notch is a bit tired of people offering him everything. So here are a few tips to get your game in the spotlight:
- Demonstrate a quality game. Notch chose many titles on this basis, as do many other promoters.
- Submit press releases to news agencies. You can send them to us at dan@nerd-age.com. Or just use the feedback form below.
- Get your fans to tell others about your game. It may find the right person to help you.
Follow these guidelines and you should be able to find a crowdsourcing promoter of your own. Be forewarned that there is no such thing as a free lunch, and you may have to pay them back.
