Castle Story by Sauropod Studio

Recently the Canadian developer made a big splash with a surprise voxel game. Castle Story is a building game where you build castles then defend them.

The basics of Castle Story

On a base level, in Castle Story you create your castle using Bricktrons. They will build your castle for you. They have basic pathfinding and combat scripts. They’ll mine and carry your blocks for you. You know, the grunt work that is a bit tedious.

You put down clear “phantom blocks” and pre-build your castle. Once you’ve built the phantom castle they’ll finish the real one for you. It’s quite a marvel to see your creation move from fake to real.

Then comes the fun of fighting. The Bricktrons will have basic weapons like swords early on, but more are promised to come later. We’re hoping for ballistae (giant crossbows basically) and maces personally.

More advanced features are a dynamic day and night cycle for early on, as well as the mandatory destructible environments. Explosive barrels are already in the game, which means you start out with some basic destructive power.

Later editions of Castle Story

We can only assume there will be more siege weaponry in the future. There has been no word on whether you can save any of your castles yet. It seems a shame to build a grand and towering castle only to see it destroyed forever.

Later features will also include monsters. While these will most likely be NPC monsters, it would be nice to see player-controlled warbeasts in future editions. If this game comes across as a deep strategy game, there will be nothing on the market quite like it.

Be sure to check out their website at Sauropod Studio. It’s being developed part time by two Canadians named Francois Alain and Germain Couet. This is the epitome of a small developer trying to make it big. Please give them your support.
