Bungie has abandoned Halo to work on a new project.
They will be giving Halo rights over to some of their smaller subsidiaries. But what does this mean for fans?
To celebrate this end of an era, Bungie will be auctioning quite a bit of its Halo memorabilia. They’re calling it a symbolic gesture of giving Halo to the fans. Now if they’ll just give the source code over and make it open source, then they would be giving Halo to the fans. That and they of course still own the rights to the game.
On another interesting side note that hints towards future development, Bungie is looking for ‘a talented PlayStation 3 developer, or a mobile/server engineer with a passion for real-time data access, scalable high-performance systems and world domination”.This could mean that they are trying to take their next game to the PS3. Most likely they are aiming to become a huge multiplatform publisher.
They have also mentioned that their main website will be undergoing a huge change. In the same paragraph they hinted that this relates to a new universe of games for them. We can’t really be sure as Bungie has even done temple exploration games in the past, but space has been their most successful venture.
It’s not totally clear how Bungie Aerospace will fit into the new scheme of things. It is clear that they will be breaking into the social and mobile network. So far we can only guess as to what games they will be making, hopefully never another Halo rehash.
Basically it means that anything could happen. Bungie has failed with lackluster games like Oni, succeeded with amazing games like Marathon and has had Halo as its cash cow for quite some time. Regardless, they claim to have something huge on the horizon for fans to watch for.
