Usually when an anime for a game comes out it is absolutely terrible, like Disgaea. Fortunately this one isn’t quite that bad but nor is it amazing. Let us take a look at why that is.

The art fluctuates between really good and lazy. First take a look at the background in the picture above.
Then look at the shading on this picture.
Now look at how tall Hakumen is compared to a hunched over Ragna. The art is quite inconsistent. They have some absolutely beautiful background. Even some parts of the characters and fights look really nice. During other parts it’s either highly simplistic or ugly. The fights also fluctuate between nice and pretty boring.
The Story of BlazBlue Alter Memory
It stays pretty close to the actual story with certain small changes. There isn’t anything abysmally, horribly changed really. They just moved some things around. So kudos to a game anime not completely butchering the story.

If it did the art or fights to a consistently high level this would be a 4 or a 5. Unfortunately everything fluctuates between high and low quality. The fights either look really cool or are boring, often within the same exact fight. The voice work is find but not spectacular. All in all it is very good for an anime about a video game. As an anime itself, we have seen this done before and better by a great many shows. Not the least of which are Trigun and Cowboy Bebop. Overall this show ends up being the epitome of an average show. For hardcore fans this might be enough to have them watch it. I’ll stick with the game itself thanks. I can see the story and play a video game at the same time.
