At Nerd Age we know about a lot of beta games, free and otherwise. We decided we would organize some that you should hear about.
- Dota 2 does have a beta signup. However they are still testing with select users right now, which means the average person won’t be in. You can win a beta key here or here. While there are release dates subject to change, they haven’t said when this beta will be open to more players.
- The Battlefield 3 closed beta has been on for a while for people who pre-ordered BF3 or bought Medal of Honor. The open beta comes September 29th. You should be able to access it through Origin or the respective stores for your console. As far as our information goes, everyone will be eligible.
- You can get a chance to beta test Star Wars: The Old Republic with this link. As with any application like this, it will be hit or miss whether you get in.
- The Diablo 3 beta is going on now. To be eligible for any testing from Blizzard, you have to follow their opt-in program.
- Now for a completely different game, World of Planes is currently in beta testing. You can sign up at their beta test page here. If you loved World of Tanks this could be a great game for you. It should also be easy to get into this beta.
- It is worth mentioning that the Minecraft beta period will be ending at Minecon. They are supposed to be revealing the first edition there. There is no telling whether they will continue updating at the same rate.
- League of Legend’s Dominion mode was in open beta on the 22nd. As usual, Riot has terrible servers that could not handle the demand. This caused awful wait times. Instead of spending some of their money on better servers and IT people, they closed the beta. Update: They will be intermittently be opening it again. At the time of the original writing it was closed, now it is open again.
Tips for applying:
- Give your full information, including specs and previous gaming experience. Testing is a plus.
- Do not stress you are doing this just to have fun, stress that you will give them detailed and regular feedback. Let them know you are doing it out of love for the series. Insure them that you are capable.
- If you have any sway with a gaming community, it might help to mention that.
And that wraps up our first edition. We didn’t cover every beta out there because there are just too many. If you would be interested in this as a regular feature, let us know.
