This game is coming up as a pay-what-you-want on the 14th and it has potential. It combines turned base strategy with a hex over-world that you can gain territory on. Both of those sound fun so we’re going to do a spotlight on it.
The Depth of Airship Dragoon
You play as one of six Steam-punk factions vying for terrain. You equip your troops with a variety of different weapons then fly them around on a steam ship. The selection there promises to be quite nice when the game is finished, from explosives to laser weapons. Once you find a place you want to attack the game switches to an XCOM style of play as well.
So this does some things other games do but it stands out to us for combining a hex over-world with turn-based strategy. It has worked well for other games with over-world maps like the recent Disgaea.
The World of Airship Dragoon
As with any Steampunk setting it takes place in an alternate reality. Several factions are feuding over territory including the:
- Austrio-Hungarian Empire
- British Royalists
- Chinese Dynasty
- (Amusingly enough) The Zulu Nation
You fight over tiles with specific attributes and maps for the ground combat. It reminds us somewhat of the overworld map for Mount and Blade which was really fun all around. Right now there are only two campaigns but we expect that to change down the road.
Airship Dragoon is a Work in Progress
From the 14th to the 17th of December you can pay what you want for this one at Indie Game Stand. They also have a Steam Greenlight page if you enjoy it. Finally you can try out the demo here. The graphics are a bit strange right now but we think they will improve over time.
