Sports shows and books need something special to get ahead. The action of Hajime no Ippo. The brotherhood of Eyeshield 21. The Liar Game style manipulation of One Outs. You won’t find any of these in Ace of Diamond at all. If you want a completely typical and massively boring series because you love baseball more than anything this is for you.
Ace of Average Art
The art flows between simplistic and clichéd drawings to some nice shading. It goes from terrible to good in one episode, leaving it at average. Those who draw Ace of Diamond can’t figure out whether they want their show to look great or not. Some of the art is also badly done and poorly inspired, such as Eijun’s dad. He appears to also be the father of Takamura from Hajime no Ippo. Or maybe the artist was giving you a subtle hint to watch that instead.
The Ace of Diamond Story
The story centers on Eijun Sawamara. Amusingly enough he’s like a walking stereotype of an all-American kid who never actually existed, even though he’s in Japan. He cries over baseball and loves his friends/school. A famous Tokyo school comes to take him for their team because he played hard and overreacted in an earlier game. He now has to deal with a new team and adapt to boring conflicts that don’t matter in the long scheme of things.
Where have we seen this from a main character? Oh in every show for boys ever.
The “Comedy” of Ace of Diamond
The comedy centers around “lol so funnay” overreactions and funny faces made by characters. Every joke you see in here, which is kind of the point, has been done before.
Final Verdict 1/5 No Potential
There are dozens of sports titles that are done much better than this. They’re competing with ones that are legitimately good for any kind of show, not just the genre. As such Ace of Diamond falls on its face. It gets the lowest rating because you can trip into a better series in the exact same genre.
