Sony E3 2012 Press Conference Review

This was in the opening of it. They know that when I think Sony E3 2012, I think bloodbath. And red paint.

Sony E3 2012 Not Off to a Great Start

This one started off with a montage of the various games they will be showing. As you might expect, the Sony E3 2012 press conference is a mixed bag with many third party titles. This is Sony after all. But we have to give them props for not having Usher nor Flo Rida. We got off to a good start by having a fairly long and boring speech. Ironically, he mentioned the true gamers at E3, when the true gamers would be sitting in their house playing games. E3 is mostly for the press these days, many of whom don’t even play games. They play them  on Facebook, at best. He also mentioned how gamer passion is driving Sony. We assume this is why they brought us waggling controls.

Fighting for Pretension

Right out of the gate we start out with some vague info on a game where the letter B is a 3. They did at least have some footage that they are saying is real-time. If you have played Heavy Rain then this is going to be a bit of the same. If you enjoyed pressing X to Jason, then this is for you. As for us, we were less impressed. Irony is the theme here, because the guy who introduced it bragged about the voice actor, and the character proceeded to not talk for quite a bit of it.

Sony E3 2012 Playstation All Stars Battle Royale

Sony E3 2012 and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale

We have mixed feelings on this one. We love Parappa with all our hearts. However we are not sure whether this game will work out. Well, it will hopefully be fun to play as Sweet Tooth in Smash Bros. Might work out. It is going to be cross-compatible on Vita and PS3, which is nice. Super attacks at least look good. There was also a cryptic hint at the end, and it sure looked like the Big Daddy from Bioshock.

PS-Vita Cross Control

Some games, such as Little Big Planet 2, will be featuring PS Vita and PS3 cross-platform capabilities. They seem to be competing with Nintendo for the controller system market. We do not yet know this market exists. They are also touting the PSN games, probably as more damage control for well, losing all our personal info. They forgot to mention that thousands upon thousands of users were hacked. They did however give the press there one year free.  Also they are bringing back FF7, so either rage or rejoice depending on how you feel about the game.

Sony E3 2012 Featured Crackle Vita

Crackle TV is Coming and Assassin’s Creed 3 Liberation

We are so excited. Wait, what is that? Anyway it is coming to Vita, with Youtube and music programs. So basically your Vita is now your DVD player or perhaps MP3 player.  In another ironic twist, “Unique Games” made just for vita were mentioned, then we were shown Assassin’s Creed 3 Liberation. It appears to be pretty much exactly the same game as the other ones. We are just really hoping that the irony is not lost on their CEO.This one has tons of ship warfare, because the other games had ships, but not warfare. In fact, most of the gameplay we saw was some guys fighting on a boat. So we dub this Boat’s Creed 3: Revolutionary Boatfare.

Sony E3 2012 Far Cry 3 Multiplayer

Far Cry 3 and the Magical Secret Game

Their other reveal was a multiplayer portion of Far Cry 3 for 4 people. It appears to play in a similar fashion to Borderlands and you can revive fallen partners. We can’t say too much, because this is at least something different for the series. Apparently this is a part of the game they were trying to keep under wraps.

Sony E3 2012 Wonderbook

Of Course, the Playstation Move

Sony is at least taking a better stance than Microsoft on this. They basically said “it’s okay if you don’t want it, but we’re using it anyway”. Which is better than Microsoft’s one, which is saying things like “Skyrim is better with Kinect.” The move is also getting what equates to a tablet book program.  We are not really sure how to feel about that, but we would rather read a real book ourselves. J.K. Rowling is going to do a book for it called the “Book of Spells.” The PlayStation Move lets you pretend to cast spells, which is what we all always wanted. Right….. So far it is not looking great.

Sony E3 2012 Wonderbook Fail

Burn it all Down

We do not think teaching children to start fires is a good idea. However it was the high point of the conference when the woman failed to cast the spell multiple times. The book tells you that “you’ve got a talent for fire making.” This is definitely something we need to give the kids. It does warn them not to do it in real life, but it seems a bit too little and much too late.

PlayStation Suite

They also pushed the PlayStation Suite, which interacts with Android. So well, if you like Android here they come. Some watered-down games for you. They have also decided to make some phones “PlayStation Certified.” They are also going to start calling it PlayStation Mobile now.

Sony E3 2012 God of War 4

God of War 4 Footage

We also got additional footage of God of War 4. Kratos takes care of some minor enemies and reforms an elevator he rides up. It mostly looks like the same game as the others, with big enemies and over-the-top cinematics. Also, there is more climbing. Every modern Sony game must have sideways rock climbing. It is vital. We cannot have a game without it, if we do have one it was a mistake. We need some in Twisted Metal.

Sony E3 2012 The Last of Us

The Last of Us Gameplay

The final section was some gameplay for a game called The Last of Us. In this post apocalyptic world, hugs are your strongest weapon. If you are in trouble, your partner will come and deliver a double hug to the enemy. Okay, not really, but the game shows absolutely nothing other games have not done before.  I don’t know about you, but this generic third person shooter is really showing what Sony can do.
