First Impressions Winter 2012: Thermae Romae

Thermae Romae

Thermae Romae is a show about a Roman bath architect, who travels through time to look at modern Japanese baths. This show is set mostly at bath houses, so this show is not really for children.

Thermae Romae starts with Lucius trying to make an old fashioned Roman bath. His boss believes that people would no longer want to use that bath and lets Lucius go. To unwind Lucius goes to the bath with a friend and ducks beneath the water to get away from the noise, which leads to him being pulled under. When Lucius emerges it is in a different bath, one unlike any he has ever seen. Lucius takes all that he learns from his time in this new bath and uses it to make a successful new Roman bath unlike any other.

Thermae Romae Fruit Milk

When I first heard about this show coming out this season, I thought it sounded really weird. I went and read the manga which was pretty good. This show so far is sticking to the manga, which is great.  I hope that it will continue to do so in the future.

This show takes an old anime plot device of having people travel to a magical land and does it in a way that isn’t seen as much. The magical land is modern Japan which can be pretty funny at times. Lucius marveling over flavored milk is one of the best parts of the show.

Unfortunately the show isn’t all good, the animation for the show is not good. It uses a limited animation style. Over time the quality goes down I don’t see this one getting any better with time.

Overall I enjoy this series so far despite the animation being pretty bad. If you watch this show be on the lookout for strange things popping up during the show.
