First Impressions Winter 2012: Brave 10

Brave-10-Why

Brave 10 is trying to be a show somewhere between Sengoku Basara and better period pieces like Lone Wolf and Cub. Unfortunately it misses the mark by quite a bit.

Brave 10 bland opening

While Brave 10 isn’t terrible by any means, it’s not amazing either. It starts out with your basic guy (Saizo) meets girl (Isa), guy saves girl from ninjas and they bicker even though they clearly like each other. Nothing we haven’t seen before. He is of course incredibly strong for reasons we’ll learn later.

Brave 10 super powers

The art is also neither terrible nor amazingly beautiful. Everything about this show simply smacks of being average. The voice acting is good though, the conversations feel natural.

There is of course a ninja named Sasuke later on. Because, how couldn’t there be? This show does everything you’ve seen before. There are even magic herbs and log substitution. Not a drop of originality is to be found in the first episode.

Brave 10 the air

The most potential is seen in the very serious scenes. It seems like the writer had more talent for them. It was the only part of the show that made me take notice. However I couldn’t help but feel that the section was a cheap appeal to emotion. One strong scene does not make a decent show.

I thought that the show had picked up but then it slapped me again. The girl has incredible magic powers and a dark side. We’ve only seen this ten thousand times. Overall the show has been critically panned thus far, as well it should be. There just isn’t much to enjoy here.

Final verdict: In the end this series doesn’t know what it wants to do. It does nothing but copy other shows. It does nothing at all to stand out. While it’s not awful, it’s also not remarkable. Overall this show is dropped, because you can see 20 things like it in a day.

Your review seems to have been done without much research. Speaking about originality, how “original” can a show about ninjas and samurais get? If their fighting techniques diverge away from the norm they would no longer even be called ninjas or samurais. Also, another point. This is Brave 10 and the story pretty much revolves around legendary characters. The author didn’t name them – I’d suggest you google the Sanada Ten Braves and perhaps give this series another chance :)

I would be nice to you, but you don’t deserve it by starting out with “without much research”. So let’s go down all the ways you are wrong.

#1 “without much research”: Everyone knows the ancient stories, and the Sanada Ten Braves have been done many times in smaller chunks, and in other forms. They’ve also been done better.

#2 “how “original” can a show about ninjas and samurais get?”: It could have interesting plot twists. It could have likeable characters. The characters are less interesting than the original story. It could change the original story in great ways. This does none of these. Naruto, for all it’s awfulness in the 3rd section of the story, looks brilliant by comparison.

#3 “the author didn’t name them” I suggest you get some reading comprehension. Where did I complain about the names even once? If you’re suggesting I didn’t know who the show was about, that’s simply incorrect. The only thing I could give you there, is that I probably should have mentioned so many ninjas are named Sasuke in other shows in part due to the Sanada legend. But it’s a rather common name in things like this anyway.

That’s quite fine if you like a sub-par story. I don’t, but hey some people like to listen to LMFAO. But even the tale of Son Goku was redone for original Dragonball (not Z) and it was great. They took a ton of old mythology and made it fresh. To this day Dragonball is a good series because they did this. Rurouni Kenshin changed quite a bit about history while keeping the basic idea.

Brave 10? It’s an anime for the fangirls to squeal about, due to the “attractive” men. And trust me, most of these characters would not have been half as attractive if they had been drawn true to the story. Many of them were blood-drenched, brutal men. Somehow these characters manage to kill people and only get the blood on the girl, for the most part.
