Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman is the latest show with character designs by Lupin the Third creator Monkey Punch. The art style has some serious similarities. Today we are going to go over whether this show can live up to the legend.
The art of Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman
The art itself is quite nice. While not as extravagantly beautiful as the Fujiko anime it is an improved version of Lupin art. There are also some similarities between how the various characters look. Overall I very much enjoyed the art style of this show.
The story of Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman
The story focuses around Roman and some side characters. These include his sister who works with him. He helps people by day with random jobs as they are the helpers.
At night he works as a Robin Hood style thief. Stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Roman himself pretends to be an idiot in order to remain normal.
The more important characters also have secret powers. Roman has a special battlesuit he uses and one of the police detectives has special golden guns.
Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman and Batman
The characters have quite a bit in common with Batman. Roman himself has a Batman-like appearance in armor. He also is a dark character when in his armor. But he has a jovial demeanor outside it.
One of the major antagonists looks like Catwoman in her outfit. She also uses poisoned claws. Big O is apparently not the only show that likes Batman. She also has a love-hate relationship with Roman. Much like Catwoman.
The most important police characters are more like Gordon and Harvey Dent than Inspector Jigen. So amusingly this show has more in common with Batman than Lupin.
Dumb comedy and Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman
This show has comedy which focuses on various people beating up Roman. Either his sister is throwing things at him or he’s losing at gambling.
The humor is basic and has been done before many times. Overall I did not even chuckle, which lost it serious points. Fortunately they stop doing it so much in episode three.
The terrible pacing of Bakumatsu Gijinden Roman
As nice as the show sounds it just goes too slow. For long stretches of each episode nothing interesting happens. Then out of nowhere at the end lots of interesting things happen.
The end part of each episode is really good. It is action-packed with some good art. Unfortunately this takes up a tiny part of each episode.
The pacing of the overall story is bad as well. It takes until episode three for all the important characters to be in. At the same time we still know barely anything about them.
It does seem to be getting better as time goes along. However taking to the third episode to get better isn’t acceptable. Other shows like Eden of the East, Madoka and Jojos are interesting at episode 1.
