Chihayafuru a story of a girl’s quest to make a karuta club and become the queen of karuta.
Chihayafuru starts with Chihaya recruiting for the karuta club. Then after she meets up with a childhood friend there is a flashback to how she got into karuta in the first place. After the flashback there is a portion where the club is slowly recruiting more members. After it is officially a club, they really get into the competitions and training.
Chihayafuru had some wonderful character development. During the course of the show there was growth from most of the characters. Most of that growth was centered on the main characters, but it seemed like even side characters were learning new things about themselves and growing. Especially towards the end of the series. Chihaya from the beginning to the end of the series had to overcome her insecurity, overcoming handicaps of her playstyle while still keeping true to her strengths, and other things as well. I really liked how the characters were always trying to improve themselves throughout the show.
The emotions portrayed in the show were just right. I felt for the characters during their journey. It really made the show feel like more than just a show about a game. The only thing I wanted more of was a bit more of that romance they were hinting at with Chihaya and her childhood friends.
The ending to Chihayafuru was probably the worst part since it did not really end the story. There are so many loose ends and it is easy to tell the story should go on after. Hopefully there will be another season to this show later. It comes full circle and gives hope for the future, but I still want more.
Overall despite the ending being left open Chihayafuru is a great show. The character development and pure emotion this show puts out makes up for it. The fact that I even want another season says it all.
Score: 4 1/2 If they come out with another season I will have to come back and fix this.
