AKB0048 episode 10 explores another issue that idols would have, this time it is about body image. It is time for the gravure photo shoot and Makoto is embarrassed about her body. She thinks her belly is too fat and her boobs are too small. After finding out about the photo shoot Makoto starts to starve herself to help fix the problem. Suzuko figures out what is going on and helps Makoto to look more like she would want for the photo shoot. I think overall they went a bit too lighthearted on body image and did not fully address it. They made jokes out of the girl starving herself and trying to change the way she looks. They even made her boobs grow from the jellyfish sting to up the comedy level. I think that this issue is not something to try to make funny or light of. Young girls who are idols and models hurt their bodies all the time due to having poor body image. Having Suzuko address that she should be fine with the body she has was nice, but not enough. I know they probably do not want to go too deep so they can get a younger audience, but this is an issue that should not be laughed off.
Gravure photos for girls in their young teens. This kind of rubs me the wrong way. I know the culture in Japan is different, but why do girls that are not even fully developed need to be a sex object? It is no wonder Makoto feels bad about herself, she is not even fully developed and she is competing with full grown women to be sexy.
I must be strange because I want less Sonata squeezing her chest and more of her with a fish head.
AKB0048 is still being stingy with details about the mysteries of the series. Sensei Sensei appears to have revealed a new song and the time is right for something. The light coming from Nagisa and Chieri is apparently so usual that Tsubasa had to get an old center nova to photograph them to capture it. Maybe one or the both of them will be the new center nova in the future. Something about being center nova is really dangerous though because the photographer said she would stop Tsubasa from opening the position again.
Moral of the story is that jellyfish hate fake boobs. It shouldn’t be, but it is.
